The Nigerian Dream: What is Keeping you

This morning a friend of mine told me he had the opportunity of moving out of the country but refused because he has a plan here Nigeria. I began to wonder and these came to my mind.
Some of Nigeria’s major problems are tension, high poverty rate, insecurity, persistent criminal activities, poor electricity supply, unemployment, lawlessness, injustice, mismanagement of funds, corruption, to mention a few.

Under all these, you and I still live in our dear nation. Though some have tried hard to abscond but efforts proved abortive while some like me are just being patriotic, what we call suffering and smiling.
I see on a daily basis, Nigerians still move out of the country in troops in search for a greener pasture. Its not the issue of individual view as some people had suggested rather its the issue of whether the economy is favoring you or not. You may be okay here in Nigeria living fine but a more developed country might make you earn more and maximize your potentials. The reasons why Nigerians are still in Nigeria is a mystery. Even the learned and well-equipped in terms of resources are complaining of low standard of living.

For me, am here because it is my home and it will for ever be. Am here because it is still fair and useful to me, I hope it continues to be.

What is your own? What is keeping you in Nigeria? Patriotism?. Use the comment below:

Survival Kit For Nigerian Startups

This is what you need to do in this recession in order to stay above the sea level. There is nothing impossible as I believe Nigerians are hardworking people.

Get Empowered. Read up and leave your comment

1. Stay Positive

“Life is not the way it’s supposed to be, it’s the way it is. The way you cope is what makes the difference.” – Virginia Satir

When you and every member of the team stay positive, you’re putting yourself in the best position possible to not only make it through those bad times, but become better in the process. You can do one of two things when life takes a turn for the worst. You can remain positive and remind yourself that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel and that you’ll make it through, or you can curl up in the fetal position and relegate yourself to being nothing more than a victim of circumstance.

2. Get Creative
There are times when you can’t do much to change your situation. You just have to deal with it. But there are other times when you can actively work to make the situation better. Now is the right time to think of other verticals, afterall it’s a startup. Are you currently targeting financial industry? Now you can look into creating apps that show filling stations and current pump price, queue size, number of attendants, rate of sales, etc.

The solution won’t be in plain sight, because if it was you probably wouldn’t have gotten in that situation in the first place. But if you can take a step back and see the bigger picture, you may discover something that can help you.

A great example of getting creative during a difficult time is the story behind Wrigley’s gum. The founder, William Wrigley Jr. was a soap and baking powder salesman in the 1890’s and he always offered free gum to all of his clients. With his career as a salesman taking a turn for the worst, he noticed one thing that forever changed his life; people loved the gum he gave away more than the products he was actually selling. It was that one creative insight that got him through that difficult time and made him a monumental success.

3. Learn From these Difficult Times

“Facing difficulties is inevitable, learning from them is optional” – John Maxwell

Take a review and see what exactly is being affected by this down time. After evaluating this, then brainstorm on the ways this can be fixed by thinking of alternative solutions.
Do you all have personal cars and fuelling is now a problem, one option is to reduce cars and arrange a place for a meet up where you pick yourselves up. You can do a rotation of whose car to use on weekly basis.

4. Realize you’ve come a long way

Sometimes we get so focused on the road ahead, that we never look back to see what we’ve already traveled. Give yourself credit for everything you’ve already done. Think about startups that have started and gone dead till date.

You’ll give yourself a confidence boost when you realize that you’ve already made so much progress and the light at the end of the tunnel will get brighter.

5. Focus on What You Can Control, Not What You Can’t

Some situations are beyond your control and no matter what you do, you can’t change a thing. You and your guys will be setting yourself up for frustration when you focus your time and energy on things you can’t control. You’re also making the situation seem even bleaker than it actually is because you’re focusing on the negatives.

You should instead focus on the things that are within your control because that’s the only way you can make a change that’s actually going to help you. Make a list of everything you can control about the situation and divert all of your focus towards those things. Anything that’s not on the list, doesn’t get any attention.

You are the next big thing!

Programming and Computer Science: The Reality

Presently, real programmers, I mean raw code writers here in Nigeria are deprived of their entitlements financially and socially.
No standards, no opportunities, no enabling environments, unending discrimination from companies that hire Indian programmers.

Although, posts  have been created on how to brand programmers but that would only bring a temporary solution and for only those who has the resources to step up their business. we need a permanent change; an atmosphere for current and future programmers. a vision of a time when people would be creative and willing to give to the society by providing e-solutions. when will Nigerians be part of list of inventors. we are talented. How can this be achieved.

I believe by combining ideas from experienced programmers, home and abroad, and successful programmers, we can make something out of nothing.
#from my perspective, I think there should be focus on programming in the ministry if sci and tech, by this programmers will have platforms to receive kudos for their works.
one thing we must understand is that computer science can never be compared to any IT related course done in any IT schools anywhere. computer science comprises of various computing theory and sub-fields within it. some of which are:

Artificial Intelligence
Communications
Computational Biology
Computer Graphics
Computer Modeling
Computer Programming
Computer Science
Distributed Computing
Encryption
Hacking
Information Technology
Internet
Mobile Computing
Photography
Quantum Computers
Robotics
Software
Spintronics
Video Games
Virtual Reality
WiFi

Specializing in any of the above fields indicates the ultimate application of the knowledge of computer science. It is also an indisputable fact that computer science graduates possess the ability of becoming an expert in any field within a short period of time, just like graduates from other courses in their various fields.

Thank you. Greatest computer scientists!. what we do is transforming theory into concrete substance. understanding the logic and principle behind every single thing. Keep Your Head up High.

SUCCESS LINES (1)

The following are some of my jottings from a few books and articles I read last week, make use of them too, I am sure you would hardly find them all together anywhere on the cyber space:

  1.       MY LIFE IS A MISSION AND NOT A JOURNEY

  2.       PEOPLE WHO SEE OR LIVE LIFE AS A JOURNEY HAVE FEW THINGS WITHIN THEIR CONTROL

  3.       PEOPLE ARE REMEMBERED FOR THE MISSION THEY ACCOMPLISHED NOT FOR THE JOURNEY THEY EMBARKED

  4.       AM NOT JUST IN THIS WORLD TO ADD UP TO THE ADD NUMBER OF PERSONS, I HAVE A PURPOSE

  5.       WHEN YOU ARE ON A JOURNEY, YOU FOLLOW THE TRAIN, WHEN YOU ARE ON A MISSION YOU FIND YOUR WAY.

  6.       ANYBODY WHO CONSISTENTLY JUDGE YOU BY YOUR PAST SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO HAVE A HAND IN THE MAKING OF YOUR FUTURE

  7.       MY PAST LIFE MIGHT HAVE CAUSED ME TODAY’S PAIN, BUT MY TOMORROW GAIN WILL DEPEND ON TODAY'S PRICE.

  8.       NOTHING CAN STOP A MAN WHO BELIEVES IN HIMSELF. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE FOR HIM

  9.       THE ONLY WAY TO ACHIEVE THE EXTRA-ORDINARY IS TO DO THE EXTRA.

  10.   YOU WILL PROGRESS FASTER AND BETTER IN LIFE IF YOU FOCUS ON YOUR OWN PURSUITS WITHOUT MINIDNG WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OTHER PEOPLES’S BUSINESS

Employing The Omoluabi Concept

Our cultural values have been abandoned and the world is in disarray. Now is the time to respect our unequaled wisdom, values and lifestyles by seeking the ways of people before us in order to build a better future that we desire.

As an instance, I present to you a brief detail of the YORUBA culture. The Yoruba identity could be summarized in a behavior of a typical Yoruba man. As far as Yoruba ethics and teachings are concerned, a typical Yoruba man is respected through his hard work and his contented with what he gains from his handwork. This man is most described as Omoluabi in the Yoruba encyclopedia.
A typical Yoruba man is courageous and firm in his dealings. He doesn't tell lies irrespective of the circumstance. He is ready to fight for his right and always at alert in a defensive manner. However, he is not foolhardy.

In a sentence, The Yoruba philosophy is based on “Iwa lewa” meaning Character is beauty. And to the Yoruba, Your ATTITUDE determines your ALTITUDE in life.

Also of which I take pride in is in the aspect of “family as an Institution”. In the Yoruba culture, the family is a sacred entity. A typical Yoruba family is child-centered, ruled by the elderly, and controlled by adults. It is also the most effective agent of socialization. The family teaches the first lessons in discipline, personal gratitude, and affection. The family is where young people are exposed to their first preferences and prejudices. In the family, the lessons in honor and shame are learned.

The world today is fast advancing and technology is simplifying lifestyles.
Sadly, the result or side effect of this display of insanity, in view of this it is highly necessary we all join in the crusade to eradicate moral decadency and further degeneration just as it is being promoted by the Yoruba culture. Just like the nature of a typical Yoruba family, our families should be built on sound intellectual engagement centering on love, respect, decency, character, dignity, chastity, and responsibility among others. As prescribed by the Yoruba culture, children should imbibe the spirit of selflessness, humanity, peaceful co-existence and industriousness. We seek a time in the future when mediocrity would be a sin and genuineness would be celebrated. With all these, if taken into consideration, a better future is assured.

Programming Challenge - BUMPY sequence

*got to know about this bumpy sequence problem while chatting with a senior colleague last night*

The problem goes thus:

Start with any positive number n. If n is even divide it by 2, if n is odd multiply by 3 and add 1. Repeat until n becomes 1. The sequence that is generated is called a bumpy sequence. For example, the bumpy sequence that starts at n = 10 is:
10, 5, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1
and the one that starts at 11 is
   11, 34, 17, 52, 26, 13, 40, 20, 10, 5, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1
Write the int lengthBumpy(int n) such that:
lengthBumpy(10) returns 7, and lengthBumpy(11) returns 15.
You may assume that the argument n is positive and that the sequence converges to 1 without arithmetic overflow.

NB: Write it with any language of your choice...
